Breeding in the South West has long held the reputation of producing precocious and tough racehorses. This reputation is owed in part to Ayguemorte Stud. Founded in 1970 by Dr Yves Frémiot, former amateur jockey and current president of the SW breeders' syndicate which has over 400 members, Ayguemorte Stud covers 55 hectares in the village of the same name, Ayguemorte les Graves, 20km south of Bordeaux. The stud is in the middle of the graves wine-producing region on the banks of the Garonne. The land is part clay, part limestone and is riddled with irrigation channels left over from vineyard activity.
The Marquesa de Moratalla has supported Ayguemorte Stud for many years and she sent D Frémiot her horse Solicitor. This star of the South West, winner of the Derby du Midi in 1977, finished second in the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly, and then remained in Paris to take the Gr 3 Prix Daphnis. Back in the South West, Solicitor was to reveal his talents as an excellent reproducer.
Today, after having carried the same red and pale green silks, Nombre Premier (Kendor) follows the same route as his illustrious predecessor.
The Frémiot family, composed of Dr Yves and his twin daughters, Virginie who works on the stud and Carole who trains at La Teste with her husband Patrick Dufrêche, enjoyed great success in 2008 thanks to a son of Nombre Premier. The homebred Vertigineux won two Group contests and a Deauville Listed event in December.
Amons the Ayguemorte's 20 foals from 2008, there is a full brother to Vertigineux named Vert et Gris.
The stud has also recruited young sire Carlotamix, a son of Linamix whose first yearlings are expected in 2009.
