Jean Biraben is a regional figure in racing who has gained a national dimension.
This entrepreneur in the business of foie gras and the gastronomy of the Bearn region is a local of the area but he only happened upon racing by chance, upon a lucky visit to Mont de Marsan racecourse.

His business acumen lead him to not only own a few horses for fun, but to build his own breeding operation. A precursor on the Anglo-Arab market, notably in the crossing of Tunisian mares with French stallions, he gradually moved towards thoroughbreds which today compose 3/4 of his broodmare band of 40 mares.

Biraben owns shares in several stallions, including majority shares in Bernebeau and Le Triton. He has enjoyed great success with his Arabians (Enzil), Anglo-Arabs (Zamouncho) and thoroughbreds thanks to Listed winner Johan Quatz (daughter of Johann Quatz) and the excellent jumper Double Car, unlucky first-past-the-post in the Grand Steeple Chase de Paris.
