The Haras d'Etreham covers 250 hectares just a few hundred metres from the sea, just behind the famous Omaha Beach in Normandy. The stud has belonged to the de Chambure family since the 1940s. It underwent considerable development under the guidance of Roland de Chambure and is now in the hands of the third generation of the same family.
With 213 boxes in 6 yards, the stud has a resident veterinary surgeon on call around the clock and boasts specialist facilities including a mini laboratory, X-ray and development room, padded stable, etc. There is also a forge for the farrier.
The Haras d'Etreham has long been among the leading vendors at French and international sales, both in quantity and quality.
In August 2009, the Etreham presented 50 yearlings at Deauville. 43 were sold in the ring and 3 more privately, for a clearance rate of 92% an an average price of 125,000€. Etreham sold the top priced yearling at 900,000€, a son of Storm Cat purchased by John Ferguson.
The Etreham has recorded two historic scores at Deauville. In 1998, the sum 10 million Franc was attained for teh first time by Melikah, a daughter of Lammtarra and the champion Urban Sea. In 2002, the highest price in the history of Deauville's sales was recorded by Vimy Ridge, a daughter of Indian Ridge and Maximova, with a bid of 2 million Euros. These two fillies are both from Etreham families. The stud was notably home to the great matron Allegretta, dam of Urban Sea, and grand dam of Sea The Stars as well as Anabaa Blue who has returned to his birthplace for stallion duties.
The Etreham is renowned for its quality stallion roster. Former stars Kaldoun and Fabulous Dancer have been replaced by ten sires including the ultra-proven Poliglote, Lando and Green Tune. Stormy River and Falco began in 2009 and for 2010 the stud has recruited three new stallions. These are: Elusive City from Ireland where he has already sired Elusive Wave, Artiste Royal, brother of Aquarelliste, and Pomellato, a son of Big Shuffle.
In addition, the Etreham has opened a National Hunt branch at the Haras de la Tuilerie near Argentan. This is home to two stallions, the proven Saint des Saints and youngster Irish Wells.
The Haras d'Etreham is managed by Ludivine Marchand, while commercial management including nomination sales for both the Etreham and Tuilerie sires is assured by Franck Champion.
