Gérad Ferté is a former arable farmer, now retired, he maintains his horse breeding activity which has been on the go for almost 40 years.
He owns 5 broodmares, but only breeds from 2 or 3 each year in order to restrict his activity to 15 horses. He keeps his youngstock, breaks them at home, and puts them in training at 3.
Until now he has sold few horses as his breeding operation is based around the rather un-commercial discipline of cross-country.
After buying a racehorse in the 1960s, Ferté owned a first broodmare without success. In 1980 he purchased Keen Dancer, a thoroughbred which he crossed with AQPS stallions.
Keen Dancer produced the fillies Lile Dancer and Javeline. The former, herself a French cross-country champion, is an ancestor of dual Grand Cross de Craon winner Fujiyama, Gr 3 Grand Prix de Pau winner Darjeeling III, and current English hurdling star Punchestowns. Javeline is at the origins of the useful Imelight and Jungle Fever.
Gérard Ferté has also acquires two further bloodlines, one from a "Lageneste" family, which has produced Moneur d'Ygrande and is now represented by Ours Qui Fouille, and another from the "Cyprès", Ogonelle.
Gérard and Odile Ferté's son Hubert is now the manager of Tinarana Stud in Ireland.
