Horse owner since the late 90's, José Delmotte, who started at Nicole Rossio's, began as a small breeder with no land and then decided to move up in 2005. He then bought a farm near Gacé in Orne, at the bottom of a typical Norman valley. Since, he assembled 272 acres, and most importantly, improved or built many facilities on this farm which never had horses on before. He built 65 boxes and positioned 17 miles of post and rails. He gave his stud the name d'Haspel from "D" for Delmotte, "HA" for Haras (Stud), "SP" Sport, "EL" Elevage (Breeding).
José Delmotte gathered around 30 broodmares by buying top quality since 2008. He also has his own stallions policy to aim top level production.
The Haras d'Aspel was able to board its first outside horses during the 2009-2010 winter thanks to italian mares who came to be bred in Normandy. With a commercial objective, equiped with all breeding, stallions and sales services, the Haras d'Aspel is divided in 4 distinctive units.
1 - A foaling barn, with a night watch, sweating belts and stocks
2 - A barn + outside boxes for mares with foal at foot (specific boxes for weanlings) and stocks
3 - A special unit for sales yearlings (brand new 20 boxes), with an arena, a roofed lunging ring, a roofed 8 horses walker, a walking sand track of 490 yards, 4 sand paddocks and 8 grass paddocks. This unit will also become the stallion yard.
4 - Being built at the moment, a 12 boxes yard for broodmares with staff accomodation.
Born in a farming family in the North, tenth among 11 children, José Delmotte started early in active life. In pursued his career as a real estate agent near Paris. His daughter Sandra along with his son in law Yannick Pacou took the management of the stud, with 4 full time employees, one part-time, a trainee and 3 apprentices.
This allows all 75 horses to come in at night all year round. The stud should stand 1 or 2 stallions in 2011. It mainly aims to outside clients, even offering a week end break every year at the farm to most owners who board their mares.
