Brother to Eric (the trainer) and cousin to Bruno (the breeder), Patrice Vagne is based on 615 acres where he grows crops and breed cattle and horses. The farm used to be his grand father's Augustin and his dad's Gabriel. The latter purchased Ogygie, a daughter of Verdi born in 1958, from Louis Charbonnier, the mare who became the origin of Patrice Vagne's breeding, based not far from Cercy-la-Tour in Nièvre.
He kept mares bred from this precious maternal family: Iska and Unika II (Prix de l'Avenir) on one side, Arénice (Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris) and Isisore Ranson, in partnership with Alain Deliberos, and Ogigy II, last daughter of the original Ogygie, on another side. She is the dam of Kamillo, Jubilée, Provence and Medison, who made smashing debuts with Bernard Sécly before going to England.
Also, Patrice Vagne kept an old family bought by his grand father from Henri Berry, in Saone-et-Loire, in the 40s. This family gave the Vagne the champion Isopani, who made history when he became the 1st AQPS to win the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in 1981, trained by André Fabre. His cousin Jasmin II did exactly the same 2 years later, whom dam was kept by Mr and Mrs Berry. This is the same family as the flat champion filly Brune d'Ex.
Usually, Patrice Vagne sells the colts, mainly through François-Marie Cottin, Guy Chérel and Philippe Peltier, and keeps the fillies who will be trained by his brother Eric Vagne. This is how they met with victory at top level on the flat with Jubilée II.
